Preston shines but Thriplow fall to defeat

08 May 2018

After another game postponed due to the erratic weather, Thriplow made another long trip to Stamford Town, another newly-promoted side and fell to a slightly unexpected defeat.

Skipper Alastair Cliffe made up for his first-game aberration and called correctly, allowing him not unreasonably to ask Stamford to make first use of what looked a helpful track. Jack Upton, back in the side to spearhead the attack, settled into rhythm straight away but partner Jack Quartermain was rather more profligate and opener Chris Bore took an immediate liking, launching him back over his head for six in his first over.

The introduction of David Myers slowed the run rate and three wickets in his first six overs, including the dangerous Bore to a well-judged catch from the skipper, strategically placed on the long-off boundary, induced such a sense of caution into the Stamford batsmen that 48 runs in the first ten overs became 107 in 35.

Richie Turner again bowled his ten overs straight off and included seven maidens in his figures of 1 for 12 and with Freddie Preston providing good support, albeit generous with his tally of wides, the Stamford innings closed on 167 for 9, satisfactory from the away side's perspective.

Any thoughts that Thriplow would stroll through an easy run chase were, however, rapidly disabused, as opening bowlers Chris Birch and Steve Prentice made excellent use of conditions just right for bowling of less than extreme pace and placed such a  stranglehold on the innings that after 15 overs, five top wickets had gone for only 20 runs.

Freddie Preston and Jack Upton led a recovery, amid hopes of pulling off an unlikely victory but Preston was left largely to plough a lone furrow in compiling an excellent and patient unbeaten 64 and the innings ended at 114 in the 44th over.

Eight points from the match was a disappointing return but focus now turns to the first of several 'local derbies', at home to Great Shelford next week.
